Black Dots
blak dot-s
noun
Definition
Black Dots are an issue that plague Fiberscopes and Flexible Fiberscopes. Fiber optic or glass cables can break or strain, causing the image to be peppered with tiny Black Dots or Broken Pixels. Once the bundle of cables start to lose its structural integrity, it becomes easier and easier for individual cables to break. If left untreated or unrepaired, these Black Dots can eventually obstruct the view of the inspected part, rendering a Fiberscope or Flexible Fiberscope useless. Since these image-obstructing dots are the result of a single broken cable, visual inspection technicians will often allow a certain amount of them before repairing the unit. Repairs can be costly and it is possible to damage a Fiberscope to a point of total replacement.
